Wildcrafting: Forest Feast - Sunday, March 25th, 2018

Date:
Sunday, March 25, 2018 - 10:00am

Sunday, March 25th - come discover wildcrafting and share in a Forest Feast at the Volcan Mountain Foundation's Volcan Mountain Nature Center at the headwaters of Santa Ysabel Creek in Julian.

We'll also see the early signs of spring! VMF Education Coordinator, Janice Smith, will lead you on a short hike through the lush Volcan forest to identify edible plants and pick some for recipes. Then everyone will roll up their sleeves to prepare Stinging Nettle Pesto (to serve with pasta), a Miner's Lettuce and Spring Greens Salad, Douglas Fir Needle Shortbread Cookies, and Manzanita Bark Tea.

Wildcrafting is the age-old practice of collecting or harvesting plants from their natural habitat, or “wild” habitat, for food, medicine or craft.  It applies to uncultivated plants wherever they might be found and is not necessarily limited to wilderness areas.  Ethical considerations and sustainable behaviors are practiced, such as protecting endangered species and avoiding potential depletion of commonly held resources. The practice of sustainable wildcrafting requires making a commitment to develop your knowledge and connection to the natural landscape, deepen your local sense of place, and take responsibility for its regeneration for future generations.

Time: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm.

Workshop Location:  Due to the gated entry for VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center (22850 Volcan Road, Julian, CA), please plan to arrive between 9:45 and 9:55.
