Julian Farm-to-Table End of Summer Celebration--Hosted by Cook Pigs & Friends

A tasty focus of this spring’s Volcan Mountain Foundation Julian Film Festival was farm-to-table sustainable food.  VMF is excited to feature this movement on Saturday, September 13th with the Wild West Pork Fest, a Fab Feast for fifty hosted by Cook Pigs and friends.  Round up your posse and share in the farm-fresh feast.

Truly a family operation, headed up by Krys and Mike Cook, Cook Pigs is a small, boutique ranching operation situated at 5,000’ in Julian’s Cleveland National Forest.  They breed heritage pig varieties that are given free-range to grow slowly and feed on a macro-biotic diet consisting of apples (of course!), other seasonal local produce, grass, roots, natural herbs, acorns, and are finished on macadamia nuts.  The carefully selected diet, high-elevation cold weather, and naturally foraging for acorns, makes for happy pigs with great marbling.  The marbling, or fat in the meat, is making Cook Pigs pork a prime commodity for home cooks and chefs alike.  They supply pork to over 60 of the hottest regional farm-to-table restaurants in Southern California.  In the backcountry, Cook Pigs pork is often featured by Julian Chef Jeremy Manley at Jeremy’s On The Hill in Wynola.

The Cook family loves to show off their sustainable farm in Pine Hills and is excited to host the Wild West Pork Fest as a benefit for the Volcan Mountain Foundation.  Jessica Noble of A Noble Event and Dish Dames is donating her event coordination and decoration services to create a fun Wild West theme.  Guests are encouraged to don their favorite cowboy/cowgirl attire and tour the ranch with Krys before indulging in an entirely pork-inspired feast.  In addition to learning more about their farm and their pork, the centerpiece of the feast will be a whole pig that the Cooks will roast in the ground.  During cocktail hour, guests will enjoy libations courtesy of Julian Hard Cider as well as wine compliments of Orchard Hill Country Inn. Chef Jeremy will tempt your taste buds with an out-of-this-world appetizer of candied bacon, and other pork-infused sides to accompany dinner featuring fresh veggies from Wynola Flats Produce.  Cook Pigs pork fat will be crafted by Chef Charles Scott of Candied Apple Pastry Company into an indulgent dessert that he will contribute for the feast.

The cost for the summer evening event is $50 per person.  Space is limited. Make your reservations by phoning the Volcan Mountain Foundation office at 760-765-2300 or sending an e-mail to info@volcanmt.org.  For more information on this event and other VMF Fab Feasts visit www.VolcanMt.org.
