Wildcrafting: Summer White Sage Wreaths & Smudge Sticks, Sunday, July 23rd, 2017

Date:
Sunday, July 23, 2017 - 9:45am

Sunday, July 23rd come learn the art of wildcrafting with sage at the Volcan Mountain Foundation's Volcan Mountain Nature Center at the headwaters of Santa Ysabel Creek in Julian. REGISTER NOW!

Summertime, when the sun is at its peak, is a wonderful time to celebrate the abundance of nature and the warmth and beauty that surrounds the season. Wreath making goes back to ancient times with various historical variations on their purpose dating back to Roman celebrations of victory and both Pagan and Christian interpretations. Whatever your inspiration to create, the word “wreath” is derived from an English word meaning to twist, such as in a circle. We will be using twisted grape wreaths and very fragrant local white sage where each participant can create a beautiful wreath of their own.

Wildcrafting, is the age-old practice of collecting or harvesting plants from their natural habitat, or “wild” habitat, for food, medicine or craft.  It applies to uncultivated plants wherever they may be found, and is not necessarily limited to wilderness areas.  Ethical considerations and sustainable behaviors are practiced, such as protecting endangered species and avoiding potential depletion of commonly held resources. The practice of sustainable wildcrafting requires making a commitment to develop your knowledge and connection to the natural landscape, deepen your local sense of place and take responsibility for its regeneration for future generations.
