Wilderness to Table-Wildcrafting with Acorns, Sunday, November 8th
Sunday, November 8th come learn the art of wildcrafting at the Volcan Mountain Foundation’s Volcan Mountain Nature Center at the headwaters of Santa Ysabel Creek in Julian.
Don’t miss this next opportunity to learn about wildcrafting with acorns from outdoor educators, Janice Bina-Smith and Kathleen Beck. As well as playing an important role in California’s oak woodland ecology, acorns are a traditional food source of indigenous peoples of North America, but especially California Native Americans. In San Diego’s backcountry and near Volcan Mountain that includes the Iipay of Santa Ysabel as well as the Kumeyaay.
You’ll learn how to identify native food sources, especially those that may be growing in your own backyard, and learning to incorporate them into everyday life—think ‘Wilderness to Table’. Participants will discover how the first peoples traditionally ground acorns into flour and discover some of the foods that were made with the flour. Then you’ll make acorn flour sugar cookies. Later explore oak woodlands that thrive alongside the lush riparian landscape of VMF’s Volcan Mountain Nature Center
From 10am-1pm. Limited to 12 participants. Activity fee is $20.
Please RSVP to Nicole at the VMF office no later than Friday, November 6th at 760-765-2300 or admin@volcanmt.org. Due to the gated entry for VMF’s Volcan Mountain Nature Center (22850 Volcan Road, Julian, CA), plan to arrive between 9:45 and 9:55.
